We have several fully qualified dental hygienists working at the practice. Your dentist will refer you to a dental hygienist for scaling and polishing of your teeth and for treatment and advice relating the health and maintenance of your teeth and gums. Dental hygienists are experts in the treatment of conditions that can affect the health of the soft tissues in your mouth. They can help you to look after your teeth and gums by offering instruction on cleaning and flossing techniques you should carry out at home.

Some patients may be prone to pockets of space forming between the edge of the gum and the tooth. As food becomes trapped in the pocket or plaque forms, bacteria can multiply which can lead to infection. If this infection is left untreated the soft tissue can recede and shrink away from the tooth in the affected area. Over a period of time this can lead to the roots of the tooth becoming unstable making the tooth liable to becoming loose and falling out. In fact over 70% of all teeth lost are due to the effects of gum disease and not dental decay. Unfortunately the symptoms of gum disease are not always easily detected, although bleeding on brushing may be a warning sign. This is why it is important to attend regular examination appointments with your dentist. The dentist gently measures the depth of any pockets with a probe as this provides a good indication of any gum disease that may be present. Other warning signs are bleeding gums and the presence of dental plaque which harbours the bacteria that can lead to problems occurring.

In cases where gum disease has progressed you may be referred to our specialist periodontist who is an expert dentist in the treatment of disease that affects soft tissues.

Certain factors may add to the risk of gum disease progressing in patients. These include smoking, pregnancy and some medical conditions and medications. Please ask your dentist if you are at all concerned or would like more information.
