Periodontology describes the area of dentistry that specialises in the treatment of gum disease. More than 70% of tooth loss is through gum disease rather than dental decay. The symptoms of gum disease can be experienced as a reddening and inflammation of the soft tissue around teeth, or a more common sign of gum disease is bleeding on brushing or bad breath. Advanced gum disease can lead to the soft tissue around the teeth receding which leads to the recession of the bone that holds teeth firmly in place. That is why teeth are lost due to gum disease.
During your routine examination, your general dentist and dental hygienist will carefully check for any signs of gum disease by measuring the depth of any pockets between your teeth and gums and looking for signs of bleeding. Should you require a referral to a Periodontist your general dentist will explain the reasons why and arrange for you to see a Specialist at the practice.
